Step 1 of 3: Equipment

A contractor quoting a mini-split install in Kiowa County has to size for what the equipment will actually face, and the weather record here shapes that calculation. 169 severe weather events were recorded in Kiowa County, Oklahoma between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a regular feature of operating life in this area, not an occasional disruption, which means the sizing decision, the mounting location, and the quality of the line-set work all carry more consequence than they would somewhere the load stays predictable. A unit undersized or poorly sited will strain against conditions that arrive here with real regularity.

Older electrical panels are often undersized for a mini-split's dedicated circuit, and in Kiowa County's housing stock, that mismatch is common enough that a contractor will check the panel before anything else on the installation list. Half the homes in Kiowa County, Oklahoma were built in 1962 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Housing from that era was wired around the appliances and heating systems of its time. A panel that has never been upgraded draws the scope of work before the equipment is ever chosen, and what the contractor finds there sets the budget more than the unit itself does.

What a Mini-split Involves as an HVAC Installation

Illustrated cutaway of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by pipes to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, where it delivers conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house and houses the compressor and coil that do the heavy work of the system.

A conduit bundle runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, carrying the refrigerant lines, power wiring, and condensate drain line together in one path. A wall-mounted thermostat or remote control gives the occupant direct command over each zone.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your house.
